It’s been a year since my last big poetry feature and I’m really excited about this one. Last year, a dear friend gave me an opportunity to share my voice. She allowed me, a relatively unknown poet to have a platform to share and express my words and my heart and it felt good. I’ve grown a lot since then; I’ve tuned into who I am as a creative and am continuing to cultivate my crafts.
This year, I’m proud to say that I’ve written a few more pieces (I’ve also developed their sound), and I’ve done the occasional live painting. All of this will be on display on June 29, 2011 at my Wednesday night “get-right”. Check the flyer for deets. Hope you can make it.
**FINGERS CROSSED** I’m hoping to have prints of the featured paintings for sale. I will keep you posted.
*Besos*
Fresh is…
DOPE. Point<blank>period. Ever since I was musically introduced to this Brooklyn emcee last year, I’ve become a fan and have a deep appreciation for what he’s giving to the game. I previously posted a video from his project Mothership/Land (which is STILL heavy in rotation) last year and have been keeping my eyes (he’s also an ill illustrator/designer) and ears on him.
The Quiet Life
Daily has landed his Mothership and has released a new project by the name of The Quiet Life, which has a completely different feel, but is equally as “wavy” as he’d describe it. Art Mirrors is one of my favorite tracks from the project. Check it out, and if you digs, download all of The Quiet Life (yes, it’s FO FREE!!).
New Jersey hip hop trio, St. Joe Louis, is making moves! Check the Basquiat Boys’ new video for their single, Good Morning, featured on their last project, 30,000 ft. High and Rising. Congrats to the group; the single is now available on iTunes.
It’s been a while since I’ve physically gone to the movies. I’ve come to a point where I’ve opted to wait until it becomes available on TV or some form of rental. There are a few story lines that will get me in a theater seat and one of them is a good love story (have you forgotten who runs this blog so quickly?). I’m all about comedy and some good action, but the hopeless romantic in me will ALWAYS celebrate love (especially when “love” looks like Laz Alonso).
Today’s Musical Mood is inspired by some of the songs featured in Jumping The Broom. I won’t say much about the movie, except that it will most definitely be a part of my Love Jones, The Best Man, and The Wood collection when it’s released. From El Debarge to Al Green, and Curtis Mayfield to Aretha Franklin, the soundtrack had me mentally two-stepping while the movie had me holding back the tears (I invite you to picture that). Enjoy, and go see the movie!!
It’s been a while since I’ve posted some musical goodness from the femcee photographer and House of Jaz FWB Emperess. She releases her brand new single “After The Mornin” featuring Hassani Kwess (prod. by Volume of T.I.M.E). This is the first single from her upcoming mixtape “To Mr. Mosley w/Love” scheduled to release this summer. If you dig, download it and check out her previous projects here.
Myk Dyaleks does it again! I couldn’t let this month pass by without including this unfinished, yet EXCLUSIVE track from an upcoming project of the New Jersey emcee. Dyaleks is easily one of my favorite lyricists, period. His ability to paint words (and my desire to paint to his music) keeps him in constant rotation on my various playlists. If you like what you hear, please check out his various projects here.
Since I’ve lived in the DMV (Washington D.C., Maryland, and Virginia) I’m happy to say that I’ve witnessed some very talented artists, singers, musicians, and poets. The dopeness of David James is no exception. Lead singer of the hip hop alternative soul band Ndelible (and Verses fam), James has the gift of vocalizing the human emotion in a very raw yet melodic way (think John Legend, John Mayer, with a hint of Dave Matthews?). I’ve heard Ndelible perform in different spots around the city and can say that I’m never disappointed and am most definitely a fan! If you’re in the area, you should check him out tonight at Wednesday Night Verses. Watch the videos (the second one features the lovely Ari Lennox, another gem of the DMV), download his band’s latest mixtape, Mammoth, and thank me for sharing the musical goodness.

The month of April is National Poetry AND Jazz (the genre, not yours truly) appreciation month. It’s only right that I dedicate most if not ALL of the remaining posts for the month to both art forms (with of course a touch of art). If you have something you’d like to have posted, please send your poem, song, or video for review to hojdmv@gmail.com.

This song has been HEAVY in my rotation. I’m pumped about checking him out tonight with J*Davey. Check the details below:
